Placement Process for English, Math, & Reading
All new students submit ACT scores (if available) prior to meeting with an academic advisor. If ACT scores are not available, students will take the Accuplacer. Academic advisors will work with students to determine the best academic course placement. Placement into Math, English, and Reading courses is based on either:

Reading Placement
1. Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) - These noncredit courses help students build the skills needed for college‑level work. Students are referred to AEL reading support if they have an ACT Reading 13 or below or Accuplacer Reading 200-226
2. RDG 085 - ACT Reading 14 or Accuplacer Reading 227-240
3. RDG 092 - ACT Reading 15-16 or Accuplacer Reading 241-250
4. RDG 093 - ACT Reading 17 or Accuplacer Reading 251-257
5. No reading coursework required - ACT Reading 18 or higher or Accuplacer Reading - 258 or higher

English Placement
1. Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) - These noncredit courses help students build the skills needed for college‑level work. Students are referred to AEL writing support if they have an ACT Writing score of 16 or below or an Accuplacer Writing score of 230 or below.
2. ENG 101S - ACT English 17 or higher or Accuplacer Writing 231-249
3. ENG 101 - ACT English 18 or higher or Accuplacer Writing 250-300

Math Placement
Math requirements vary by program. For guidance on which course(s) you should take, please talk to an academic advisor.
1. Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) - Focus Forward Math (FMM 087/088): these are noncredit courses that provide extra support to prepare you for future classes.
2. MAT 096 - ACT Math 15 or higher or Accuplacer ARITH of 220 or higher
3. MAT 098S - ACT Math 16 or higher or Accuplacer ARITH of 248 or higher
4. MAT 098 / MAT 105 - ACT Math 17 or higher or Accuplacer QAS 237 or higher or Accuplacer ARITH of 276 or higher
5. MAT 121 / MAT 155S / MAT 157S - ACT Math 19 or higher or Accuplacer QAS-244 or higher
6. MAT 155 / MAT 157 / MAT 158S - ACT Math 20 or higher or Accuplacer QAS of 263 or higher
7. MAT 158 - ACT Math 22 or higher or Accuplacer QAS of 276 or higher or Accuplacer AAF of 237 or higher
8. MAT 171 - ACT Math 25 or higher or Accuplacer AAF of 250 or higher
9. MAT 168 / MAT 175 / MAT 210 - ACT Math 27 or higher or Accuplacer AAF of 263 or higher
10. MAT 180 - ACT Math 28 or higher or Accuplacer AAF of 276 or higher
Biology Placement
For the below courses, students are able to take a placement exam if they do not have the prerequisite coursework. For questions, please talk to an academic advisor.
BIO 260 / BIO 260L - 76% or higher on placement exam (or a “C” or better on prerequisite coursework)
BIO 246 - 76% or higher on placement exam (or a “C” or better on prerequisite coursework)
Students who believe their placement is not reflective of their abilities, they can request for their placement to be reconsidered. To challenge placement in Math, Reading, Writing, or Biology, please go to the SCC Assessment Center to retest (a fee might apply if you are retaking the same test).
