ECI 299 - Special Topics in Academic English 3 Credit(s)
Focuses on practice of all four English Language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in a specific area, such as business, culinary skills, translation, education, etc. Emphasis on application of English skills in mock real-life situations that students may encounter in chosen field. Critical thinking and cultural differences will also be addressed. May be paired with a vocabulary class that addresses special topics as well. Recommended to be taken with ESL 113 , depending on topics.
Prereqs: ESL instructor or department chair permission Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: Online Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be able to improve their proficiency in reading and responding to issues within their chosen specific areas, demonstrating measurable progress from pre-assessment to post-assessment, with at least 10% improvement in comprehension and response accuracy.
CLO 2) Students will be able to recognize the meaning of common expressions, terminology, jargon, professional terms, and/or idioms used in the specific area being discussed, demonstrating 80% accuracy, as assessed through a quiz or oral discussion.
CLO 3) Students will be able to model authentic and fluent conversation skills when speaking about the specific subject being studied, demonstrating 80% fluency and accuracy, as assessed through oral presentations or peer discussions, with feedback on content and delivery.
CLO 4) Students will be able to explain the content and vocabulary of lectures about the specific subject being studied with 80% accuracy, as assessed through a quiz or oral assessment.
