Placement Process for English, Math, & Reading
All new students must submit their high school transcripts, college transcripts, and ACT scores (if available) prior to meeting with an academic advisor. Academic advisors will use a multiple measures approach and work with you to determine the best academic course placement for you. Placement into Math, English, and Reading courses is based on either:
High School GPA and ACT scores
- or -
Placement Exam
English Placement
Based on your placement, you will need to take one of the following courses when you begin English/Reading courses at SCC.
1. Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) - These are noncredit courses that provide extra support to prepare you for future classes. For more information, please visit the Non-Native Speaker Assessment Process on the Assessment Center webpage
2. RDG 085 (unable to take ENG courses in same semester)
3. RDG 092 and ENG 095 (able to take in the same semester)
4. RDG 093 and ENG 096 / ENG 101 (ENG 096 is built in tutoring hours with professor to assist you in ENG 101)
5. ENG 101 and no reading class is needed.
If you believe that your placement is not reflective of your abilities, you can request for your placement to be reconsidered. To challenge your placement for English or Reading courses, please reach out to the Program Coordinator for English and Reading.
Math Placement
Based on your placement, you will need to take one of the following courses when you begin Math courses at SCC. Your degree may require a higher-level math course. For questions, please talk to an academic advisor.
1. AEL: Adult Education and Literacy: Focus Forward Math (FMM 087/088): these are noncredit courses that provide extra support to prepare you for future classes.
2. MAT 096 - Pre-Algebra
3. MAT 098 - Beginning Algebra
4. MAT 121 - Intermediate Algebra: MAT 121 is the prerequisite course for MAT 158.
5. MAT 158 * - College Algebra or MAT 158 w/ MAT 058 * - College Algebra w/ Support.
MAT 155 * - Contemporary College Math or MAT 155 w/ MAT 055 *
MAT 157 * - College Statistics or MAT 157 w/ MAT 057 *
*Talk with your advisor to determine what level of Math is needed for your program.
To challenge placement in Math, please go to the SCC Assessment Center to retest (a fee might apply if you are retaking same test). For testing accommodation, contact Disability Support Services, in advance, at dss@stchas.edu.
