ESL 103 - Pronunciation, Communication, & Listening for Non-Native Speakers 4 Credit(s)
Instruction in pronunciation for non-native speakers. By learning the American style of intonation, rhythm/speech production and syllable stress, students will be better understood and more articulate and expressive. Small group and individual communication activities will focus on speaking and listening. Open to non-native speakers of an intermediate level or above. Student must take the ESL Placement assessment.
Prereqs: INE 101 , INE 102 , INE 199 or department placement Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be able to competently take part in discussions of global, environmental, and cultural matters, as demonstrated by a rubric that measures competency the areas of confidence, respect, informativeness, and language use.
CLO 2) Students will be able formulate answers to questions with an 80 percent accuracy rate with solutions shared in writing and/or orally.
CLO 3) Students will be able to deliver effective presentations and speeches, as demonstrated by rubrics used with debates, dialogues, and interviews and others.
CLO 4) Students will be able to produce examples of non-verbal communication across cultures, as demonstrated by verbally giving three examples of non-verbal communication and providing accurate examples in written form on class exams.
CLO 5) Students will be able to employ clear and comprehensible pronunciation, which includes speaking fluently at an appropriate speed with little or no hesitation and using grammar and vocabulary correctly so that meaning is not interrupted. This will be measured with a rubric.
