INE 199 - Phonics & Fluency


2 Credit(s)

Focus will be on improving pronunciation and fluency, especially when reading aloud. Activities include spelling and phonics instruction as well as speaking and reading exercises designed to increase reader’s fluency and natural voice when reading. A grade of C or better is needed to move into the next ESL class, ESL 104 . Emphasis will be on speaking although writing will be part of the class curriculum as well.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to identify English spelling rules, including sight words and patterns, with 80% accuracy, as assessed by a spelling test or quiz.
CLO 2) Students will be able to formulate answers to questions about short readings with 80% accuracy, as assessed through a reading comprehension quiz or written test.
CLO 3) Students will be able to correctly pronounce selected words with 80% accuracy, as assessed through an oral pronunciation quiz/reading.
CLO 4) Students will be able to recognize punctuation signals (e.g., periods, exclamation points, question marks, commas) with 80% proficiency, as demonstrated in an oral reading fluency exam.
CLO 5) Students will provide accurate examples of American intonation and speech melodies when asked, demonstrating 80% accuracy, as assessed through oral tasks or role-play activities.
