INE 101 - Intensive English: Reading & Writing 3 Credit(s)
Instruction for non-native-speaking students in developing emerging reading and writing skills in English. Students will work on essential writing skills at sentence level composition, and they will study vocabulary and idioms. Students will also be required to read, discuss and analyze short selections. Culture sharing and acclimation to the environment here in the United States will also make up some of the reading and writing assignments.
Prereqs: INE 100 with a grade of C or better, TOEFL score of over 50 or placement by ESL Department Chair Co-reqs: INE 102 and ESL 115 , plus INE 199 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote, Flex Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be able to write the four types of sentences (declarative, imperative, exclamatory, and interrogatory) with 80% accuracy, as measured by a writing assessment.
CLO 2) Students will be able to identify simple, compound, and complex sentences with 80% accuracy, as assessed by a sentence identification quiz or test.
CLO 3) Students will be able to compose several types of paragraphs using emerging grammar skills, demonstrating 80% accuracy, as assessed through in-class and at-home writing assignments.
CLO 4) Students will be able to correctly explain the meanings of selected tier two and tier three vocabulary words with 80% accuracy, as assessed by a vocabulary quiz or written test.
CLO 5) Students will be able to demonstrate verbal and written comprehension of contextual information from texts appropriate to their intensive English level, with 80% accuracy, as assessed through a combination of a reading comprehension test and an oral summary presentation.
