INE 100 - Intensive English Emerging Skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening

Focus is on helping students in the beginning levels of language improve receptive and productive language skills and build vocabulary in preparation for more academically demanding second-level INE courses. Emphasis on conversational and survival skills needed to function in a new environment. Also includes written and oral sentence construction, pronunciation, cultural basics, reading comprehension and linguistically appropriate content. A grade of C or better is needed to move into the next courses, INE 101  and INE 102 .

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to identify basic spelling patterns and sight words with 80-85% accuracy, as measured by a spelling and word recognition assessment.
CLO 2) Students will be able to sound out selected words with 80-85% accuracy, as measured by a phonics assessment or reading activity.
CLO 3) Students will be able to ask and answer basic questions in conversation (e.g., about hobbies, families, school assignments, etc.) with 80-85% grammatical accuracy, as assessed through oral conversation tasks.
CLO 4) Students will be able to read a selected short paragraph aloud with 80-85% pronunciation accuracy, as measured by a pronunciation assessment.
CLO 5) Students will be able to recount daily activities and thoughts in a journal, writing at least five sentences per entry, as measured by weekly journal submissions.
CLO 6) Students will be able to use ‘thought groups’ in a short selected reading passage with no more than two instances of word-by-word reading, as assessed during coached reading sessions.
CLO 7) Students will be able to generate a comprehensible written plan for student success, including adherence to assignment deadlines and submission of items on Canvas, as assessed by a written plan rubric.
CLO 8)  Students will be able to compare and contrast their fluency in spoken conversation before and after working with native speakers through activities such as mentor-mentee meetings, Excelerator meetings, and Conversation Circle, demonstrating improvement as assessed by a fluency self-assessment and teacher feedback.
CLO 9) Students will be able to write simple and compound sentences with 70% accuracy, as measured by a writing assessment.
CLO 10) Students will be able to identify simple grammar rules, such as simple verb tenses, irregular plurals, and subject-verb agreement with basic verbs, with 76% accuracy, as assessed by a grammar quiz or test.
