ESL 104 - College Reading for Non-Native Speakers 4 Credit(s)
Directed practice in college reading skills emphasizing vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, reading efficiency and reading across the curriculum for non-native speaking students. This course will provide students with instruction in reading techniques and vocabulary enhancement. Students need to be present in class to practice skills, work on vocabulary, read, and participate in discussions about the readings. This course will enhance the academic skills of students, as well as provide skills that allow them to comprehend and analyze what is read. In addition, lessons will focus on vocabulary acquisition and application. Attendance and participation in class is essential for success in this course. Student must take the ESL Assessment/Placement test.
Prereqs: INE 101 , INE 102 , INE 199 or department placement Co-reqs: ESL 100 , ESL 103 and ESL 107 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be able to apply academic skills to tasks such as outlining, note-taking, and skimming, as demonstrated with a timed 500-word passage and a rubric that measures clarity, accuracy, and organization.
CLO 2) Students will be able to respond thoughtfully and critically to college level readings, demonstrated with a rubric that measures accuracy, critical thinking, and reflective skills of connecting the reading to personal experience/world knowledge.
CLO 3) Students will be able to identify components of summaries and produce them, with 80 percent accuracy in the identification and production of main ideas and key details.
CLO 4) Students will be able to with 80 percent accuracy, utilize vocabulary through the use of context clues and written applications, as demonstrated with 80 percent or better on vocabulary quizzes.
CLO 5) Students will be able to analyze and comprehend reading with at least 80% accuracy, as demonstrated with assignments and tests that assess their understanding.
