ESL 106 - Advanced Reading for ESL Students


3 Credit(s)

Directed practice in advanced college reading skills emphasizing discipline-specific vocabulary, advanced comprehension, higher level critical thinking skills, improved reading efficiency and reading across the curriculum for second-language students. Student must take the ESL Placement test. 

Prereqs: ESL 103 , ESL 104 , and ESL 100  with a grade of C or better and Culture Institute after taking the ESL placement test
Co-reqs: ESL 105  and ESL 108

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to apply vocabulary to 80 percent accuracy on oral and written communications, as measured as a category in a rubric
CLO 2) Students will be able to discuss the choices and ethics related to the novels read,  assessed through participation in discussions and written assignments, graded on a rubric evaluating clarity, depth of analysis, and ethical reasoning.
CLO 3) Students will be able to thoroughly analyze novels (Lexile 970-1385), as demonstrated by written analysis and presentation, with 80 percent success based on a rubric assessing analysis, textual support, and presentation skills.
CLO 4) Students will be able to identify and apply, with 80 percent accuracy, at least three reading and critical thinking strategies to increase comprehension of various texts, as demonstrated in written reflections and a quiz/assignment.
CLO 5) Students will be able to demonstrate readiness to proceed to classes where critically reading textbooks, novels, and other relevant information is required, as shown by achieving an 76 percent on reading exams.
