ESL 108 - Intermediate Composition for NNS 3 Credit(s)
Advanced instruction for non-native speaking students in developing college-level writing skills in English. Students will work on essential composition skills, including sentence, paragraph and essay skills, as well as advanced grammar skills. Students will also be required to read, discuss and analyze short essays and selections as the foundation of discussion and writing.
Prereqs: ESL 104 and ESL 107 or equivalent with a grade of C or better or placement by the English Language and Culture Institute after taking the ESL placement test Co-reqs: ESL 100 , ESL 105 and ESL 106 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote CORE42 MOTR Number - Name: MOTR LANG 106 - World Language II Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be able to construct a proper sentence, paragraph, essay, and final research paper, to 76 percent accuracy, which includes employing level-appropriate tone, style, mechanics, and MLA citations in writing, which will be measured with rubrics connected to essay assignments.
CLO 2) Students will be able to critically analyze various cultural norms and issues, through reading selections and essay topics, with analysis skills measured in rubrics connected to assignments and discussion boards.
CLO 3) Students will be able to discriminate among various styles of writing, such as persuasive, narrative, and descriptive, with 76 percent accuracy, as shown in writing samples and/or testing situations.
CLO 4) Students will be able to demonstrate increased fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as demonstrated in a pre- and post-assessments.
CLO 5) Students will be able to generate topics, plan writing tasks and craft a fluent, developed four or five paragraph timed-essay appropriate to a B2 CEFR level, as demonstrated in an essay written in a timed setting (45-55 minutes).
