GDS 200 - History of Graphic Design

This is a survey course on the history of Graphic Design. This course will cover the history and development of visual communication. It will begin with the development of language and will trace the evolution of word and image throughout history using the works of designers and illustrators that have influenced the continuing development of the discipline. There will be an emphasis on the influence of technology, culture, major artistic movements, and socio-political factors on the evolution of graphic design.

CLO 1) Students will describe the general development of graphic design and illustration within an historical context.
CLO 2) Students will recognize the significant periods in art history and understand the impact that they have had on the graphic arts of the time.
CLO 3) Students will explore the myriad factors that played a part in the changing face of graphic design and illustration.
CLO 4 ) Students will develop a vocabulary of graphic design terms and concepts and be able to and apply this literacy in discussion / written form.
CLO 5) Students will recognize graphic designers and illustrators who have made a significant contribution to the field of graphic communication.
CLO 6) Students will describe the historical, intellectual, artistic, and technological factors that influenced the course of graphic design and illustration.
