CHM 243 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory 2 Credit(s)
Hands-on introduction to laboratory techniques and procedures of organic synthesis and identification.
Prereqs: CHM 240 with a grade of C or higher Co-reqs: CHM 241 Course Type: Combo Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote, Hybrid Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will communicate with correct scientific terminology through proper maintenance of laboratory records and written reports.
CLO 2) Students will perform appropriate laboratory calculations for procedures conducted in the lab including theoretical yield, percent yield, mass percent, mass of a compound present in a mixture from mass percent, and theoretical quantity of a reactant required from mmol quantities.
CLO 3) Students will apply microscale laboratory techniques following safety guidelines to perform chemical separation or reactions including extraction, washing, acidification, reflux reactions, distillation (simple and fractional), recrystallization, melting point analysis, vacuum filtration, slow addition of reactants, and the use of drying agents.
CLO 4) Students will interpret spectroscopic (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infrared Spectroscopy), analytical (gas chromatography), and melting point data in relation to the structure of reaction products, unknown compounds, or the composition of a mixture.
