ECI 109 - Research Writing for Advanced World English Or ESOL Speakers

Students will build skills in composition with a focus on skills necessary for writing research papers: familiarity with using the library, online databases, integrating research into essays, (MLA and APA form), while advancing reading skills, grammar, and sentence structure. Reading and writing assignments will be enhanced with classroom discussion, peer editing, and conferencing.

Prereqs: ESL 108, ESL 106, ESL 105 and approval from English and ESL chairs

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to identify and demonstrate steps in the writing process (pre-writing, outlining, drafting, editing and publishing written work), measured by scoring 76 percent on a midterm and final portfolio.
CLO 2) Students will be able to demonstrate competency in writing 5 paragraph essays, as measured scoring 76 percent or better on rubrics associated with various expository essays (cause & effect, definition, and analysis), and a final argumentative research paper.
CLO 3) Students will be able to apply techniques, such as appropriate tone and diction, incorporating leads and transitions, and writing effective, concise sentences using a variety of sentence styles, to 76 percent accuracy on grammar and language use.
CLO 4) Students will be able to demonstrate research skills such as paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting with 80 percent accuracy, as evidenced by quotations and citations applied appropriately with academic integrity.
CLO 5) Students will read, write, listen, and speak at a B2 or better level, as assessed through pre- and post-test rubrics, demonstrating measurable improvement in all four skills.
