EGR 170 - Statics 3 Credit(s)
Application of principles of mechanics to engineering problems of equilibrium. Topics include resultants, equilibrium, friction, trusses, center of gravity and moment of inertia.
Prereqs: PHY 250 with a passing grade Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: Flex Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will construct accurate free-body diagrams for particles, rigid bodies, and systems of rigid bodies, correctly representing all external and internal forces and moments.
CLO 2) Students will apply the equations of static equilibrium to solve for unknown forces, reactions, and moments in two- and three-dimensional structural and mechanical systems.
CLO 3) Students will determine the internal forces in members of trusses, frames, and machines using the method of joints and the method of sections.
CLO 4) Students will utilize the principles of friction to solve problems involving impending motion, tipping, and sliding for various static systems.
CLO 5) Students will calculate the centroid and moments of inertia for various geometric shapes and composite areas, including the application of the parallel-axis theorem.
CLO 6) Students will design solutions for open-ended engineering statics problems by integrating theoretical understanding with practical analytical and simulation techniques.
