ESL 100 - College Success Seminar for NNS

College Success and Skills Seminar for Non-Native/Multilingual Speakers enables students to learn the resources specific to their institution. Emphasis will be placed on self-development, information literacy, and the academic skills necessary for success. These transferrable skills become the framework for a student’s college experience, while setting the foundation for later career success. This course also includes instruction for multilingual students regarding key skills needed to be successful in an American college, including listening, speaking, note taking, test taking, time management, and basic written communication. Students should take this in their first semester at SCC.

Co-reqs: ESL 115  lab, appropriate to level.

The intention is to submit for MOTR approval if COL-101 is approved (as an equivalent).
Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to identify the various institutional departments, resources, and staff available to assist in academic success, to 80 percent accuracy, as demonstrated in the final assessment of college readiness, graded by a rubric.

CLO 2) Students will be able to demonstrate the transferable skills necessary to successfully navigate the academic experience including test taking, goal setting, time management, communication, and decision-making,to 75 percent accuracy on questions pertaining to these topics.

CLO 3) Students will be able to apply the institutional resources to increase language skills and information literacy (based on submissions, this could be media, library, computer, LMS…).  

CLO 4) Students will be able to articulate areas of self-growth and contribution to the global community through career and pathway development, interpersonal skills, coping skills, and service, as reflected in activities and a final reflection paper graded by rubric.

CLO 5) Students will be able to recognize the meaning and demonstrate controlled knowledge of selected academic vocabulary with 80% accuracy after developing and applying strategies for vocabulary learning.
