ESL 199 - Study of US Culture & Community

This course will increase students’ awareness of cultural, socio-economic and life style differences between the United States and other countries, as well as provide ample opportunity for non-native speakers to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will also learn more about the various regions and cultural-ethnic groups in this country. Students will learn new vocabulary and idioms, make an oral presentation, and write a short paper by the finish of the class.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to describe an observed aspect of American culture or the local community in a paper or presentation, demonstrating appropriate language use for their level, as assessed by a rubric with at least 80% accuracy.
CLO 2) Students will be able to recognize selected common idioms and vocabulary (ESL) to 70% accuracy.
CLO 3) Students will be able to identify regions of the United States and detail their differences with 70% accuracy, as assessed through a written or oral assessment.
CLO 4) Students will be able to construct a role play that involves U.S. etiquette, healthcare, and business practices, demonstrating at least 80% accuracy in using appropriate language, behavior, and problem-solving, as assessed by a detailed rubric evaluating professionalism, cultural awareness, and communication skills.
CLO 5) Students will be able to compare at least five cultural aspects of the United States to those of other communities or countries, demonstrating 80% accuracy in identifying similarities and differences, as assessed through a written report or presentation.
