GLC 190 - Introduction Comparative Culture Study

Introductory comparative study between U.S. culture and other cultures around the world through real conversation and interaction with people from around the world. Includes comparative research on an aspect of U.S. culture and another culture around the world, represented by someone in the class. Class will include a service aspect, with native speakers or experienced second language speakers taking on a mentoring role with international students new to the country. Students will articulate their viewpoints about American culture along with their perceptions of international cultures. Class may be taken by American students, students from English-speaking countries, or ESL students whose country’s governments require them to take non-ESL prefix classes.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to accurately describe at least four aspects of another culture’s practices-such as communication, etiquette, cuisine, or education-in a presentation or written assignment, as assessed by a rubric.
CLO 2) Students will be able to identify at least three cultural similarities and three differences in a written/oral reflection, demonstrating insight from interviews, group discussions, and journal entries, as evaluated by a rubric.
CLO 3) Students will be able to complete three verified peer mentoring sessions with new international students and meet engagement criteria as assessed by a reflection and mentor log.
CLO 4) Students will be able to research and present one aspect of U.S. culture and another culture, explaining how each is shaped by its background or context, as assessed by a rubric.
