HIM 220 - ICD Coding 3 Credit(s)
Study of classification systems with major emphasis on inpatient coding using ICD-10-CM and reimbursement methodologies, specifically DRGs.
Prereqs: HIM 140 with a passing grade Co-reqs: HIM 141 & HIM 221 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: Online Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will apply official coding guidelines and regulations to accurately assign and sequence ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes based on health record documentation.
CLO 2) Students will abstract data from health records, validate code assignment, and ensure physician documentation supports accurate coding practices.
CLO 3) Students will analyze regulations and guidelines to assign POA (present on admission) indicators and apply policies and procedures to validate grouper assignments (i.e., MS-DRG, APR-DRG, etc.).
CLO 4) Students will evaluate the need for physician queries when additional clinical documentation is required and review coding edits to ensure compliance.
