INE 111 - Emerging Vocabulary I for Non-Native Speaker

Basic class to immerse students in vocabulary appropriate level of Intensive English. Also focuses on use of vocabulary in conversation and writing. Word recognition and spelling will be addressed. Note: This class will begin to focus on vocabulary that may arise in academic settings, but will also include words from everyday life to increase students’ tools for operating in American society. To take this course student must place into Intensive English or ESL classes.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to recognize 250 selected words with 80% accuracy when tested, as assessed by a vocabulary recognition test.
CLO 2) Students will be able to incorporate new words into spoken conversations with 80% accuracy, as assessed through oral participation and a vocabulary usage rubric.
CLO 3) Students will be able to integrate new vocabulary words into understandable writing products with 80% accuracy, as assessed by a writing rubric evaluating word usage and clarity.
CLO 4) Students will be able to demonstrate mastery of the pronunciation of targeted words with at least 80% accuracy, as measured by an oral assessment where each word is scored on a numerical scale.
