INE 190 - Intensive English Practicum

An immersive experience for students to demonstrate general competency with the English language as well as improve both receptive and productive language skills outside the academic environment. Course will require reflection through journals and discussions on content learned, and the professor must verify the students’ attendance and participation in the setting where the students are placed. The student experience could include volunteer opportunities/exchanges on campus, in the community, or abroad where World English is practiced. Additional language skills acquired outside the classroom will include idioms, conversational skills, cultural competence, and increased vocabulary (even in World English), with expectations consistent with the intermediate level (beginning Academic ESL). A grade of C is passing, but a B or better is required for this experience to count toward the certificate. Course could be offered with a service learning option.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to employ emerging English skills in a volunteer position or exchange on campus, in the community, or abroad, demonstrating effective communication as assessed by a supervisor’s evaluation.
CLO 2) Students will be able to summarize the significance of the professional skills they displayed during their experience in a final reflection paper, demonstrating 80% clarity and relevance, as assessed by a grading rubric.
CLO 3) Students will be able to construct narrative oral accounts of their activities in level-appropriate English, demonstrating 80% clarity and coherence, as assessed through an oral presentation rubric.
CLO 4) Students will be able to summarize the significance of the professional skills they displayed during their experience in a final reflection paper, demonstrating 80% accuracy in content, grammar, and sentence structure, as assessed by a rubric.
CLO 5) Students will be able to identify at least five applications of language learning and explain how they relate to their experience, demonstrating 80% accuracy in identifying and explaining the connections, as assessed by a checklist or brief reflection.
