MEC 115 - Machine Design

Introduces analytical design of bearings, clutches, coupling, brakes, springs, gearing systems, and power shafting. Emphasizes methods of construction, machine parts and specifications of materials and manufacturing processes.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will be able to identify common design flow and the process of system design.
CLO 2) Students will analyze and select materials based on properties, calculate stress/strain, and material failure criteria, referenced in their design analysis.
CLO 3) Students will analyze properties of joints, frames, simple machines, bearings, and power transmission elements (gear drives, chain drives, etc.).
CLO 4) Students will utilize analysis figures of merit with Autodesk Inventor to create system simulations.
CLO 5) Students will analyze and define the differences and correlation between theoretical and software generated mechanical designs.
CLO 6) Students will utilize Autodesk Inventor for Finite Element Modeling of designs and how to interpret variables in the Design Accelerator Interface.
