SOC 151 - Gerontology I 3 Credit(s)
Overview of normal effects of aging including physical, psychological and social changes. Problems associated with aging, such as increased dependence, loss of health, financial constraints, loss of friends and spouse, and altered living arrangements. Content presented from perspective of aging person and society as a whole.
Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Remote, Online Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will be analyze the basic sociological, physical, and psychological aspects of aging while evaluating socio-psychological factors including adaptation, adjustment, coping, and loss.
CLO 2) Students will assess the role of social institutions (family, government, church, etc.) in fostering or inhibiting support needs of the elderly, including state and federal programs, supplements, and benefits for the senior population.
CLO 3) Students will evaluate socio-cultural issues in aging while comparing cross-cultural, racial, ethnic, and gender perspectives on the aging experience.
CLO 4) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the changing realities and perceptions of the aging process.
CLO 5) Students will apply research methodologies and theoretical frameworks to investigate and understand various aspects of aging and age-related phenomena.
