Reviews historical development of the family and patterns of intimate relationships in modern society. Analysis of institution of family in terms of relationship to other institutions in society. Specific topics include love, dating, parenting, families in crisis, and alternative lifestyles.
Prereqs: Placement into ENG 101 or a Passing grade in ENG 096 . Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: In-Person, Online, Service Learning CORE42 MOTR Number - Name: MOTR SOCI 204 - Introduction to Family Studies Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will apply sociological facts, theories, and perspectives to construct arguments about marriage and family issues, demonstrating use of major theoretical frameworks and sociological imagination.
CLO 2) Students will analyze how culture affects ideas about marriage and family while examining the role of social institutions in creating relationships and shaping family concepts.
CLO 3) Students will explain and assess how sociologists obtain and analyze information on topics related to marriage and the family.
CLO 4) Students will describe how our self-image emerges within the process of social interaction and within the primary family group.
CLO 5) Students will examine social change specifically regarding contemporary issues surrounding marriage and family structures and dynamics.
CLO 6) Students will apply and demonstrate the sociological perspective to issues regarding marriage and family. This will include being able to illustrate the principle theoretical perspectives and the concept of sociological imagination.
