HVAC 210 - Advanced HVAC Electrical Controls & Systems **

This advanced course explores the design, operation, and troubleshooting of electrical control systems used in commercial and industrial HVAC applications. Students will build on foundational electrical knowledge to master control logic, sequence of operations, and integration with building automation systems (BAS). Topics include motor control circuits, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), low-voltage control wiring, and advanced schematic interpretation. Through hands-on labs and real-world simulations, students will develop the skills needed to install, configure, and service sophisticated HVAC control systems with precision and safety.  Students in this course are eligible to sit for NC3 certifications. Students who are successful in passing the exam will earn certification.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will explain the function and operation of advanced HVAC control components including relays, contactors, timers, sensors, and actuators.

CLO 2) Students will interpret complex electrical schematics and control diagrams for multi-stage and automated HVAC systems.

CLO 3) Students will describe the role of control logic, sequence of operations, and interlocking in HVAC system performance.

CLO 4) Students will wire and configure control circuits for motors, compressors, fans, and pumps using industry-standard practices.

CLO 5) Students will integrate HVAC control systems with building automation platforms using low-voltage wiring and communication protocols.

CLO 6) Students will demonstrate proper use of diagnostic tools such as multimeters, clamp meters, and control testers to identify faults in control systems.
