MUS 131S - Music Theory I with Supplemental Instruction


3 Credit(s)

Study of basic rhythm, melody, principal triads and their inversions, dominant seventh chords, cadences, non-harmonic tones, part-writing and keyboard harmony. This enhanced section of Music Theory I includes an additional support component designed to build foundational theory skills such as clefs, notation, scale structures, pitch, and melodic writing through targeted practice and individualized feedback. Students taking this course may not receive credit for MUS 131  .

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will apply foundational music theory concepts that demonstrate recognition of notation elements, construction of major and minor scales, classification of intervals and triads, and interpretation of key signatures and rhythmic patterns.

CLO 2) Students will notate pitches on treble, bass, and alto clefs, including ledger lines.

CLO 3) Students will identify intervals and triads, including size, quality, roots, and inversions.

CLO 4) Students will interpret rhythmic values and time signatures in simple and compound meters.

CLO 5) Students will construct Major and Minor key signatures and scales, and compose simple melodies within tonal frameworks.

CLO 6) Students will analyze chord progressions using Roman numerals and Western tonal part‑writing conventions.
