AGR 230 - Horticultural Pests & Management **


3 Credit(s)

This course emphasizes the identification, biology, and management of insects, diseases, weeds, and other pests affecting horticultural crops in both indoor and outdoor growing systems. This course will focus on integrated pest management principles and responsible pesticide use. Students will engage in hands-on labs, field scouting exercises, pest identification practicums, and pesticide applicator exam preparation. By the end of the course, students will have developed the diagnostic skills and management competencies expected by employers and will be prepared to obtain the Missouri Pesticide Applicator License demonstrating proficiency in safe, legal, and effective pesticide application. Course Learning Outcomes:
CL0 1) Students will identify common horticultural pests, including insects, diseases, weeds, and other organisms that impact plant health in both indoor and outdoor growing systems.

CLO 2) Students will explain the biology and life cycles of key pest species to determine appropriate timing and methods for effective management interventions.

CLO 3) Students will develop integrated pest management (IPM) plans that incorporate cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical control strategies appropriate for specific horticultural contexts.

CLO 4) Students will apply pesticides safely and legally in accordance with label requirements, Missouri regulations, and environmental stewardship principles.

CLO 5) Students will achieve the Missouri Pesticide Applicator License by demonstrating competency in pesticide safety, handling, application methods, and regulatory compliance as assessed through the Missouri Department of Agriculture certification examination.
