History of cinema from the late 19th century to the present. Introduction to theory and criticism of film through the lens of historical analysis. Explores American and world cinema, examining genres, directing, and production styles. Students will examine film as a primary source, analyzing it as a product of the time in which it was created to understand the context in which it was created. Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will explain changes in social institutions, structures, and processes across historical periods as represented in visual media, from early cinema to today.

CLO 2) Students will describe and compare the different social, cultural, and historical settings and processes that shaped both global and American films from their early development.

CLO 3) Students will explain how different social, political, intellectual, and economic forces which shape individual human behavior are reflected in films.

CLO 4) Students will evaluate the United States’ global relationship with the rest of the world through the examination of world cinema and American cinema.

CLO 5) Students will analyze films as historical sources alongside other forms of evidence.
