BIO 246 - Microbiology

Basic concepts of microbiology including metabolism, genetics, and inhibition of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Emphasis on human pathogens, infection, resistance, and immunity. Laboratory exercises reinforce lecture concepts and teach fundamental skills in microscopy, aseptic technique, isolation, and identification of microorganisms.

Prereqs: Placement into BIO 246 or BIO 110, BIO 150, or BIO 260 & BIO 260L with a grade C or better.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will describe foundational discoveries in microbiology and the classification, structure, and characteristics of major microbial groups.
CLO 2) Students will compare the differences in cell structure, metabolism, and biological needs of viruses, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes.
CLO 3) Students will explain microbial genetics, with emphasis on mutation, gene expression, and biotechnology applications.
CLO 4) Students will describe the mechanisms of microbial growth and the chemical and physical methods used to inhibit or destroy microbes.
CLO 5) Students will interpret the immune response to microbial infections and patterns of disease progression in the human host.
CLO 6) Students will explain the pathogenesis and transmission of common bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases, and the role of microbes in public health.
CLO 7) Students will perform fundamental microbiology techniques, including microscopy, staining, aseptic methods, culturing, and isolation of microorganisms.
CLO 8) Students will analyze microbial characteristics and responses to physical, chemical, and biochemical tests to identify unknown organisms and communicate results effectively.
