EDU 225 - Literature for Children

This course examines the role of children’s literature in promoting literacy development for students in grades PK-8. Students will explore foundational reading skills and learn to evaluate texts based on quality, language, literary elements, and illustrations. Emphasis is placed on analyzing key genres, current literary themes, and trends. The course also highlights strategies for selecting age-appropriate literature that supports diverse learners and fosters inclusive, engaging instruction classroom experiences.

CLO 1) Students will describe foundational reading skills, including print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency, as they relate to early literacy development. (MTS/MIPEC 3A2, 3A3, 7A3)

CLO 2) Students will evaluate children’s books using criteria such as high-quality text, engaging and authentic language, literary elements, and illustrations. (MTS/MIPEC 1A1, 4A2)

CLO 3) Students will analyze children’s literature that is age-appropriate, genre-specific, and aligned with current literary themes and trends. (MTS/MIPEC 1A1, 1A2, 4A2)

CLO 4) Students will differentiate among the major genres of children’s literature (poetry, fiction, and nonfiction) based on structure, purpose, and instructional relevance. (MTS/MIPEC 1A1, 3A1)
