Application of principles of mechanics to engineering problems of motion and acceleration. Topics include plane motion; force, mass and acceleration; work and energy; and impulse and momentum.
Prereqs: EGR 170 with a passing grade Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Base Delivery Method: Flex Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will analyze the kinematics of particles and rigid bodies in two and three dimensions, including the ability to determine position, velocity, and acceleration using various coordinate systems (e.g., rectangular, normal-tangential, polar).
CLO 2) Students will apply Newton’s Second Law of Motion to solve for the forces and accelerations of particles and rigid bodies undergoing various types of motion (e.g., translation, rotation about a fixed axis, general plane motion).
CLO 3) Students will apply the work-energy principle to determine forces, displacements, and changes in velocity for particles and rigid bodies.
CLO 4) Students will apply the impulse-momentum principle, including collision analysis, to analyze changes in linear and angular momentum for particles, rigid bodies, and systems, and to determine associated forces or durations.
CLO 5) Students will analyze the kinetics of rigid bodies in two and three dimensions, applying Euler’s equations and calculating mass moments of inertia for complex geometries.
CLO 6) Students will design solutions for open-ended engineering dynamics problems by integrating theoretical understanding with practical analytical and simulation techniques.
