Explores earliest origins of jazz from Creole roots in Louisiana through blues, ragtime, Dixieland, big band, swing, be-bop, cool jazz, avante garde, Latin jazz, and fusion. Students taking this course may not receive credit for MUS 234 .

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will identify and differentiate major American jazz styles and key performers from the early 20th century through the jazz-rock fusion era.
CLO 2) Students will analyze and explain the historical and cultural significance of jazz in shaping American music and society.
CLO 3) Students will apply jazz terminology and listening techniques to evaluate stylistic characteristics and instrumental functions in recorded examples.
