Explores earliest origins of Jazz from Creole roots in Louisiana, big band, swing, cool jazz, be-bop, avant-garde, Latin jazz, and fusion. For students planning to major in music. Students taking this course may not receive credit for MUS 112 .

CLO 1) Students will be able to identify various jazz styles through aural and written musical analysis.
CLO 2) Students will trace the historical development of improvisation, the harmonic language of jazz and important ensemble formats.                                                                                                                         
CLO 3) Students will evaluate the cultural, social, and political influences that shaped the development of jazz styles and the contributions of key artists throughout jazz history.
