WLD 151 - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding I **

In this course students will learn the basic skills and knowledge needed to set up Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) equipment, choose appropriate electrodes and perform GTAW operations on carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel, and aluminum. Students will have an opportunity to sit for the American Welding Society (AWS) certifications tests. Students will be awarded the certificate if successful on the exams.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will demonstrate understanding of machine setup, proper cover gas selection, electrode and/or wire, materials, and techniques through a written exam provided by the AWS.

CLO 2) Students will identify and describe the hazards associated with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) in the lab environment.

CLO 3) Students will define and explain the importance of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and demonstrate proper use in the lab.

CLO 4) Students will describe and explain the importance of ventilation systems, emphasizing the health concerns related to toxic gases and vapors in welding shops.

CLO 5) Students will prepare, fabricate, and weld coupons for practical exams pursuant to the AWS SENSE program. These practical exams will be inspected by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and may undergo destructive testing to ensure a sound weld.
