HVAC 170 - Residential HVAC Service **

This course focuses on practical, hands-on training in maintaining and repairing residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, covering topics such as electricity, refrigeration theory, low-voltage controls, troubleshooting, safety procedures, and hands-on use of industry-standard tools. Students learn to work with various components, including furnaces, heat pumps, A/C units, wiring, and thermostats, preparing them for entry-level roles in the service industry. Students in this course are eligible to sit for NC3 certifications. Students who are successful in passing the exam will earn certification.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will explain the operating principles of residential HVAC systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ventilation units.

CLO 2) Students will identify the components and functions of HVAC systems such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, blowers, thermostats, and control boards.

CLO 3) Students will demonstrate proper usage of diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, pressure gauges, temperature sensors) to assess system performance and identify faults.

CLO 4) Students will troubleshoot common HVAC issues including electrical failures, refrigerant leaks, airflow restrictions, and thermostat malfunctions.

CLO 5) Students will perform repairs and component replacements following manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices.

CLO 6) Students will demonsrate effective and professional communication with homeowners regarding system issues, service options, and preventive care.
