ELE 180 - Residential Wiring Theory **

This course provides students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems in residential buildings. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on lab work, students will learn to interpret electrical blueprints, apply the National Electrical Code (NEC), and safely work with wiring methods, devices, and components commonly found in single-family and multi-family dwellings. Topics include service entrance installation, branch circuit wiring, grounding and bonding, lighting and receptacle circuits, and code-compliant practices. This course prepares students for entry-level residential electrical work and supports progress toward licensure or apprenticeship, and also provides students with NC3 Greenlee certifications.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will explain the principles of electricity as they apply to residential wiring systems.

CLO 2) Students will describe the function of electrical components including switches, outlets, panels, breakers, and conductors.

CLO 3) Students will interpret residential electrical plans, symbols, and circuit diagrams.

CLO 4) Students will install residential electrical systems including service entrances, branch circuits, and device boxes.

CLO 5) Students will wire lighting, receptacle, and appliance circuits according to NEC standards.

CLO 6) Students will perform continuity, voltage, and resistance tests using multimeters and other diagnostic tools.
