ELE 230 - Panels, Breakers, Disconnects, & Fuses **

This course provides students with in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in installing, servicing, and troubleshooting electrical panels, circuit breakers, disconnects, and fuses. Students will explore the role of these components in electrical distribution and protection, learning how to size, select, and configure them according to the National Electrical Code (NEC). Emphasis is placed on safety, load calculations, fault protection, and proper installation techniques. Through lab exercises and real-world scenarios, students will develop the skills necessary to work confidently with electrical service equipment in residential, commercial, and light industrial environments. All students will have the opportunity to earn NC3 Greenlee certification.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will describe the function and importance of panels, breakers, disconnects, and fuses in electrical systems.

CLO 2) Students will identify different types of circuit breakers (e.g., standard, GFCI, AFCI) and fuses and explain their applications.

CLO 3) Students will interpret panel schedules, wiring diagrams, and load center layouts.

CLO 4) Students will install and wire electrical panels, breakers, disconnects, and fuse blocks according to NEC standards.

CLO 5) Students will perform load calculations to determine appropriate sizing of overcurrent protection devices.

CLO 6) Students will replace and upgrade service equipment safely and efficiently.
