OTA 105 - Fundamentals of OTA I

Introduction to occupational therapy, including history, philosophy and foundational skills required for OT practice. Context is offered based on the fundamental skills needed in psychosocial dysfunction, physical and cognitive dysfunction, and pediatrics using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. Theories guiding OT practice, values, and ethics of the profession discussed.

Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO 1) Students will define and provide examples of the key terms of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.
CLO 2) Students will compare and contrast OT fundamental skills, roles, and interventions in psychosocial, physical, cognitive, and pediatric settings.
CLO 3) Students will define OT values and ethical practice principles in various clinical and nonclinical settings.
CLO 4) Students will apply the OT Code of Ethics and Core Values and Attitudes of Occupational Therapy across practice settings.
CLO 5) Students will identify and provide practical examples of the major theoretical frameworks and approaches used in occupational therapy.
CLO 6) Students will demonstrate the use of therapeutic communication and describe factors or conditions that create barriers to effective oral and written communication.
CLO 7) Students will identify the roles and responsibilities of the occupational therapy assistant as a direct service provider, educator/facilitator/manager of service, and as a member of the profession.
CLO 8) Students will provide examples of OT practitioner roles throughout the continuum of care and articulate the importance of interprofessional collaboration.
