HVAC 250 - Geothermal & Heat Pump Systems ** 3 Credit(s)
This course introduces students to air-to-air and ground source heat pump systems. Students will learn components unique to heat pumps, along with their function in the system. Students will also learn control systems and troubleshooting with emphasis placed on the selection of components and the installation of heat pump systems. Students in this course are eligible to sit for NC3 certifications. Students who are successful in passing the exam will earn certification.
Prereqs: HVAC 120 & HVAC 230 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Tier I Delivery Method: In-Person Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will explain the principles of heat transfer and thermodynamics as they apply to geothermal and heat pump systems.
CLO 2) Students will compare different types of heat pumps (air-source, water-source, ground-source) and their applications.
CLO 3) Students will describe the components and operation of closed-loop and open-loop geothermal systems.
CLO 4) Students will perform proper installation procedures for heat pump units, ground loops, and associated controls.
CLO 5) Students will identify common operational issues in geothermal and heat pump systems using diagnostic tools.
CLO 6) Students will apply corrective measures to restore system efficiency and functionality.
