NPN 101 - Fundamentals of Practical Nursing Theory 5 Credit(s)
Beginning nursing students will acquire a foundation of basic nursing theory through engaging and interactive class time, along with assignments and exams. Emphasis is on growth and development across the lifespan and the nursing process as students apply principles of biology and physical sciences and social and behavioral sciences. Concepts included: review of relevant anatomy and physiology, concepts of health and illness, therapeutic communication and relationships, communication, pharmacology, nutrition, safety, infection, pain.
Prereqs: Admission into the Practical Nursing Program, BIO 260 & BIO 260L Co-reqs: NPN 100 & NPN 111 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Tier III Delivery Method: In-Person Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will recognize normal and abnormal physical assessment findings and their rationales gained from proper techniques of physical assessment across the lifespan.
CLO 2) Students will identify the role of therapeutic relationships and therapeutic communication on patient-centered care.
CLO 3) Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate complete, accurate, concise, factual, organized and timely data in a legally defensible manner, utilizing informatics and the electronic medical record to contribute to the patient’s database.
CLO 4) Students will discuss effects of health and illness in regard to basic human needs and development across the lifespan.
CLO 5) Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe patient centered care in all health care settings across the lifespan.
CLO 6) Students will identify the relationship between physiological alterations; selected disease processes; and patient’s values, spirituality, and culture; socioeconomic status; emotional status; developmental stage; age; family dynamics.
CLO 7) Students will recognize an evidence-based plan of care, utilizing critical thinking techniques, knowledge of the nursing process and Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, for patients with infection, pain and nutrition disorders.
CLO 8) Students will analyze personal practice of resilient behavior to manage stressors unique to being a healthcare professional.
