NUR 103 - Fundamentals of Professional Nursing 9 Credit(s)
Each human being is presented as a unique individual, constantly responding to internal and external stimuli. The nursing process is emphasized as students apply principles of physical, biological, and social sciences. Basic nutrition and pharmacology are introduced. Nursing history and elements of health and disease are presented. Professional ethics and interpersonal relations are integrated throughout the course. The student will learn health assessment techniques, with an emphasis on therapeutic communication. Engaging and interactive class time, along with assignments and exams, are used to facilitate learning.
Prereqs: Admission into the ADN program, BIO 260 BIO 260L Co-reqs: NUR 113 & NUR 123 Course Type: Lecture Tuition Tier: Tier III Delivery Method: In-Person Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 1) Students will discuss the effects of nursing organizations, standards of practice, nurse practice acts and the code of ethics on professional accountability and the practice of professional nursing.
CLO 2) Students will identify the role of therapeutic relationships and therapeutic communication on patient-centered care.
CLO 3) Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe patient centered care in all healthcare settings across the lifespan.
CLO 4) Students will identify the relationship between physiological alterations; selected disease processes; and patient’s values, spirituality, and culture; socioeconomic status.
CLO 5) Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate complete, accurate, concise, factual, organized, and timely data in a legally defensible manner, utilizing informatics and the electronic medical record to contribute to the patient’s database.
CLO 6) Students will recognize normal and abnormal physical assessment findings and their rationales gained from proper techniques of physical assessment across the lifespan.
CLO 7) Students will utilize knowledge of the nursing process and Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, for patients with comfort, pain, sleep, fluid imbalance, nutrition, infection, addiction, eating, urine, and bowel elimination disorders, and for surgical patients in the perioperative phase.
CLO 8) Students will create an evidence-based plan of care, utilizing critical thinking techniques, for patients with comfort, pain, sleep, fluid imbalance, nutrition, infection, addiction, eating, urine, and bowel elimination disorders, and for surgical patients in the perioperative phase.
CLO 9) Students will discuss effects of health and illness in regard to basic human needs and development across the lifespan.
CLO 10) Students will analyze personal practice of resilient behavior to manage stressors unique to being a healthcare professional.
